Summary

Application of helminth-derived concepts to treat inflammtory diseases. Helminths use immunomodulatory molecules to regulate the immune response. We could show that a helminth immunomodulator induced a specific population of macrophages (Mreg) which induced IL-10 in T cells and was able to suppress asthma and colitis in mice. In the next funding period we aim to elucidate the mechanisms of IL-10 induction in T cells by Mregs and verify the Mreg phenotype in the pig as large animal model as well as with human cells.
